Wheezing

Wheezing Overview:

Wheezing (Sibilant rhonchi) is defined as a high pitched sound when breathing caused by the tightening of breathing tubes.  This whistling sound is heard most often when an individual is exhaling.  The problem is usually found with the tightening of the bronchial tubes, but can be due to problems in other areas of the respiratory system.  Wheezing is often associated with asthma, allergies, and respiratory problems such as infections.

Wheezing Causes:

Wheezing is caused when the tubes through which air flows are tightened due to irritation.  In the case of asthma, the airways are constricted because of inflammation and muscle spasms.  People with asthma or respiratory problems often wheeze because of an excess of mucus build up in the passageways.  Wheezing can also be caused when an object is blocking a breathing passageway

Wheezing Symptoms:

Wheezing is characterized by a musical or whistling sound when one is breathing (especially exhaling).  One also often complains of difficulty breathing and a tightening of the chest.  A doctor is able to diagnose Wheezing and prescribe treatment such as an inhaler.  You should seek medical help if you feel difficulty breathing such that you are suffocating, a mucus or bloody substance is present, or your fever is above 101˚F.
